The Right Way to Do Philanthropy

I have a problem with people who call themselves philanthropist like it’s a job or something. Before I go further, I will like to say that Bill Gates Foundation is not a target of my criticism because I really understand his cause. He also tries to get many billionaires all in a bid to fight for better world welfare. Apart from Gates and a few other people that appear to be real as well, I find it disgusting when someone describes his or her self as a philanthropist. Business men and celebrities have turned giving into public relations campaign. It has become a way of generating positive image and ‘cheap'publicity. It is pointless when individuals fly out a large television crew to cover their giving spree in a bid to boost their public acceptance.

If it is a public cause where it is almost impossible to have an anonymous donation then it is easy to understand that. It is very wrong to stick it in our faces like most celebrities do. Not all of them are guilty of this distasteful act though. There are lots of rich people who help others without saying a word to nobody. I recently read in the newspapers about a footballer who was known to give money to people. This part of the footballer was revealed by other people and not by some television crew or newspapers he employed to do so. I believe when you are helping the less privileged you don’t always have to put it up like pvc banners for the whole universe to see.
